HACG to Host SERC-NAHRO MLK Basketball & Cheer Tournament

GOLDSBORO, NC -As a true leader in the housing industry, our agency has the distinct pleasure of hosting the SERC MLK Basketball & Cheer Tournament in Goldsboro, NC, this year. Housing Authorities throughout the Southeastern Region of the United States will travel during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday (January 13-15, 2023) with their youth, families, coaches, and staff to this highly anticipated weekend of competitive sports, educational opportunities, and cultural experiences.

Since 1992 SERC-NAHRO has had the privilege of being associated with an effort to create opportunities for leadership development for youth in the SERC Region. It began with the efforts of a few strong-willed individuals devoted to the belief that providing youth from low-income families with experiences they might not otherwise have access to could have a direct, positive impact on their futures. They started a "Sports Festival" in the State of Alabama. And over these past 30 years, it has grown into the annual "SERC MLK Basketball Tournament and Cheer Competition."

We're looking forward to showcasing North Carolina's rich history in the world of sports, highlighting our accomplishments in flight, paying homage to those who have sat and stood for our freedoms, and celebrating the arts and culture. At the same time, wowing our friends with southern hospitality.

This red-carpet experience in our state, in this city, will be one our 200+ youth attendees won't soon forget.

The tournament will also benefit the local economy with out-of-town guests utilizing local hotels, concessions benefiting our local schools, and our agency partnering with numerous small businesses to provide food and entertainment throughout the weekend.

"We are looking forward to a great weekend," says Mr. Anthony Goodson Jr., CEO of the Housing Authority. "We are thrilled to host so many out-of-state guests, coaches, teams, and cheerleaders. Our staff has been working hard to get everything ready to make this a successful event. "

The media is encouraged to attend our Kickoff event on January 13th at Dillard Middle School and cover the majority of games and cheer competitions on January 14th.
